Demerit Points

Your automobile insurance company can access your driving record. If they see new convictions on your record, they are going to increase your premiums. With multiple convictions, your premiums will increase even more significantly, and some insurance companies will cancel coverage for clients who obtain too many convictions. Convictions remain on your driving record for 3 years.

Accumulation of demerit points can also have an effect on your automobile insurance premiums. Certain driving offences under the Highway Traffic Act have demerit points associated with them. If you are convicted of those offences, the corresponding amount of demerit points will be assessed to your driving record for 2 years. For more information on demerit points, refer to the Demerit Point Schedule (PDF file) or click on Helpful Links.
